The development of the baby in the womb takes place in a phases . Every month there is some development of the baby in the womb and in this way the full development of the baby takes place in the womb in 9 months.
For nine complete months while the baby is in its mother’s womb, baby does not breathe. Right after birth, the baby starts breathing and learns to breathe. So it means that the child does not breathe in the womb. But if the baby does not breathe in the womb, then how does baby survive in the womb, how does baby develop, where does baby get oxygen from. These questions in itself are quite curious.
Development of lungs
The lungs of the baby keep developing in the womb during the whole pregnancy. The lungs of the baby begin to form in the womb from the very beginning of pregnancy and these lungs are not fully developed till the third trimester of pregnancy. The formation of small sacs in the middle of the lungs called alveoli continues till the eighth month of pregnancy. These alveoli begin to form between 24 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. Until these alveoli are not fully formed and not developed, the baby may have trouble breathing after birth.
Breathing through the umbilical cord
Now from where does the baby get oxygen in the womb so that baby develops well. As long as the baby is in the womb, the baby breathes through the umbilical cord during the entire gestation period.
The umbilical cord develops by 5 to 6 weeks of pregnancy, which serves to deliver oxygen to the baby in the womb. It supplies the necessary oxygen-rich blood. The umbilical cord is attached to the placenta, through which the baby gets essential nutrients in the womb. The placenta and umbilical cord contain many blood vessels and continue to develop during the nine months of pregnancy.
That is, during pregnancy, the mother is breathing for the baby in the womb and the oxygen present in the mother’s blood goes to the baby’s blood.
How the baby breathes after birth
Now after nine months, as soon as the baby is born, the baby breathes on its own in the new environment for the first time due to exposure to air and lack of amniotic fluid.
In such a situation, within 10 seconds of the birth of the baby, the baby breathes through the nose for the first time, but the small and delicate lungs of the baby are filled with fluid during this time, due to which the sound of gasping occurs during this time.
On taking the first breath, baby tries to expel this amniotic fluid so that respiratory system also gets activated. The whole process of breathing in the lungs and nose of the child is new, so during this time it is very common for them to sneeze when they breathe.
